Building
361,
the
Steam
Plant,
opened
in
1940.
It
was
built
to
heat
35
of
Lowry’s
buildings
by
providing
steam
heat
through
a
series
of
underground
tunnels
and
pipes.
Its
four
large
boilers
were
fueled
with
coal
that
was
delivered
on
railroad tracks along 6th Avenue on the east side of the base.
The
30,000
square
foot
Steam
Plant
was
repurposed,
and
with
groundbreaking
scheduled
in
2003
began
its
conversion into what is known today as “The Steam Plant Lofts” offering 12 custom-designed loft-style condominiums
on
three
flours,
plus
two
rooftop
penthouses.
The
Steam
Plant
Lofts
building
includes
six
solar
power
systems,
making
the
Lofts
the
largest
power
plant
at
Lowry
in
early
2010,
thus
restoring
the
Steam
Plant’s
original
functions
as Lowry’s source of energy. The price of these units ranged from $300,000s to the $900,000s each.
The
Steam
Plant
Lofts
building
received
Historic
Denver’s
Community
Preservation
Award
in
2004,
and
the
Mayor’s
Design Award in 2009.
